We all go through periods of time in our lives when maintaining a workout and nutrition routine doesn’t seem to be a priority. Maybe you’re looking for a new home, suffering from an illness, just broke up with your girlfriend, or you’re travelling a lot during a busy period at work. It happens to everyone.
Life is full of ups and downs and too many people only commit to their diet and exercise routine when everything is comfortably “in place”.
You hear the statements all the time:
“I’ll go to the gym again when things settle down at work.”
“It will be easier to eat well when I get things organized at my new condo.”
“I need to recover 100% from my ankle sprain before I do any exercise.”
Yes, not having obstacles in the way certainly makes doing the right thing (fitness- and nutrition-wise) easier. But when exactly does life present you with no obstacles at all?
There’s always something to overcome…a late night or bad sleep, an argument with your spouse, a sick child. If you throw in the towel on your training and nutrition plans every time something uncomfortable comes up you’ll never progress towards your goals.
The people who are most successful in achieving their physique or athletic goals stay consistent despite all the challenges that life presents them with. They may have a leg injury and work extra hard on their upper body. They find a way to grab a healthy meal on the run when they forget to pack their lunch and snacks for the day with them. They make time for the gym during emotionally stressful periods because they know that their workout will help them cope with the drama.
If you’re ready to give up on your training and nutrition regime every time something in life unsettles you, you’ll never achieve your goals. Make adjustments as necessary and push through…you’ll be rewarded with greater results and a more satisfying life.
