You’re busy, but trust me…sleep is a good use of your precious time.
Do you spring out of bed every morning (without an alarm clock) ready to seize the day? If you don’t – and let’s face it, most of us don’t – then you’re not making sleep the priority that it should be.
I know, I know. You’re busy. There aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done.
Getting enough sleep improves your mood and energy levels and reduces stress. You’ll be less likely to swear at that guy who cut you off in traffic. Getting enough sleep helps you focus on the task at hand so your mind doesn’t wander. A wandering mind costs you time. Have you ever considered how much more productive you could be if you got enough sleep? Have you thought about how much more efficient each of your hours would be if you were fully focussed and alert all day?
Sleep benefits your immune system so you’re less likely to get sick if you’re well rested. With cold and flu season approaching, consider this an investment in your future productivity. Can you really afford to get sick and take all that time out of your busy schedule?
The Caffeine “Cure”
Hold on, Ivana, I hear you say. I get by just fine on 5 or 6 hours of sleep. Really? How many cups of coffee do you need to drink to do that? Are you falling asleep at your desk by about 3pm? Excessive caffeine intake can mask the fatigue that you would ordinarily be feeling. So try a couple of weeks without even a single coffee and get back to me.
You Really Can Get More Sleep
I know, there are some really great shows on TV after 11pm. There must be, I guess, but I’m never watching. I’m generally asleep. Cut out an hour or so of your TV time and dedicate it to extra sleep. Is that episode of The Walking Dead really worth it?
Have you heard of a DVR?
You can catch up on the weekend.
Or all that time on Facebook? Maybe you can cut out 30 minutes and get some extra shut-eye.
You need more sleep.
Go get it!
