Have you heard about the Japanese tele method?
In this video, I’m going to tell you whether the Japanese Towel Method for abs actually works and whether it can help you lose weight and improve your posture.
Hi, it’s Ivana.
Welcome to my channel.
This is the place for no BS. Science-based information about health and fitness.
So if you like the sound of that, please subscribe and hit the bell.
This is the first time I’ve tackled a controversial weight loss claim. And I think it’s going to be very interesting.
I Actually Did it!
I actually did the Japanese towel exercise for 10 days, and I did the full series, which is three sets of five minutes a day. Now I’m a science minded person. I have a couple of science degrees and I really like to see evidence. So I was pretty skeptical about this. There’s no actual research on this. It’s pretty much just a bunch of people that say it helps their back pain. However, I wanted to do it myself, just to see what the experience was like.
I figured just talking about it. Wasn’t going to be fair to you.
I did it for those full 10 days. I’m going to get to that the end. And I’m going to tell you what I found, which was really surprising to me.
Background Of The Japanese Towel Method
This method was created by Toshiki Fukutsudzi.
I really apologize for saying this man’s name incorrectly, but nevertheless, he is a Japanese doctor. I think some places they say he’s a physician, other places, he’s they say he’s a chiropractor at reflexologists.
He wrote a book over 10 years ago. Now only in Japanese. It’s never been translated into English. Despite the fact that it’s very popular.
Japanese Towel Exercise On TikTok
Fairly recently, the Japanese Towel Method showed up on TikTok. It caused quite a stir mostly by other fitness professionals like myself who were basically knocking it saying, it’s ridiculous. It can’t do what it says it’s supposed to do. So let’s look at those claims.
The first claim and the one that will make most sensible people say, yeah, right, is that this method will help you lose weight and particularly to lose belly fat. Now Toshiki claims that the misalignment of the pelvic area actually causes a sedimentation of extra fat in the belly area. And by realigning the position, you actually allow those fats to be released. Now, if Toshiki has actually gone to medical school. Then he might’ve missed some of his physiology classes because
That’s not how it works.
That’s not how any of this works.
How Weight Loss ACTUALLY Works
So you lose weight or you lose fat by producing a calorie deficit. By burning off more calories than you take in. And there are a lot of ways that you can do that. But one of those ways is not lying on the floor for five minutes a day.
So will the Japanese Towel Method help you lose weight?
In some cases where people think that they’ve lost weight because of the method is because they’ve also done other things at the same time, I actually saw one YouTuber who said, yeah, it really worked for me. And I did it in addition to a healthy diet. Okay. So for me, that’s it, it was pretty obvious there that the healthy tie it, that she’s put herself on has resulted in weight loss and fat loss rather than lying in this position. S
How To Do The Japanese Towel Method
Here’s how you do it. So three times a day for five minutes in some sources, I’ve seen just five minutes a day, but from what I can make out the original source to she, he says three times a day.
And then you’re supposed to see an improvement, both in your abs, your belly fat, but also in your posture in about 10 days.
You’re going to use a towel, which I’ve got here and you want that towel to be about 10 centimeters.
That’s just over four inches for my American friends. And he actually mentions tying strings around either end as well so that you can basically, so it doesn’t fall apart and it stays in this position. So you’re going to lie on your back with your feet apart, and then you’re going to let the toes come in towards each other, make sure that you get the towel underneath the lumber spine, going to bring your pinkies together and then reach overhead and kind of stretch it out there. And all you do is lie there for five minutes.
Now here’s where things get a little more interesting.
Toshiki also claims that the Japanese Towel Method helps to improve your posture and can help reduce back pain.
Let’s take a look at this for a second.
What actually is possible that there could be postural benefits for some people. If you think about the position you’re in, you’re basically doing a stretch. So if you’re the type of person who has duck feet, for instance, so that means that your feet are turned out slightly more than they should be. Then stretching them in that opposite position that can actually help relieve that discomfort.
If your toes are already naturally turned in, you may actually make that situation worse because you’re stretching it out and folding it in that position. And basically stretching out the muscles that are already too loose, optimal flexibility, and mobility and strength is all about bringing things into balance. So it’s possible that this position is a good one for you.
And the best way to do that, if you don’t already know, and you haven’t had a physio exam and you is to just test it out for yourself.
Stretching The Lats
The other thing is that raising your arms over your head this way can be a good way of stretching out your lax. And although I prefer other lat stretches myself, the lats are often quite tight. And if your lats are tight, it tends to pull everything in. A lot of us have that rounded posture, our upper body that’s from the computer, right?
We spend a lot of time in a forward position. So if you’re rotated a little bit too much here, then it can actually be very nice to lift your arms overhead and then let the lat stretch out.
Let’s talk about the benefits that the Japanese Towel Method provides. We know that it’s not going to help you lose weight.
We know there’s not going to help you lose belly fat. I’ve got some great videos. If you want to learn how to lose belly fat, there are plenty here on the channel. Abs are also one of my specialties. So if you want to learn more about abdominal exercises, that can be helpful.
Please check out those as well.
This Japanese Towel Exercise can however, help correct your posture. If those are the particular areas that you’re tight.
However, I do think that there are better stretching exercises, better mobility exercises over the well that you can use. If you’re going to commit five minutes a day, then a stretching routine that addresses all your tight areas is probably more helpful.
My Experience With The Japanese Towel Method
So here’s what happened for me during this 10 day Ab challenge with the Japanese Towel Method. I, at first I noticed that I was a little bit tighter on the right side when I turned my foot in, I know that I have tight hip flexor.
It was good to actually lie in that position and try to stretch that out a little bit over time. It did get a little bit better.
The most valuable part of it for me was just the five minutes lying there, breathing, just relaxing, not thinking about anything. So I have been on and off with my meditation over the years. And recently I’ve kind of gone off of it. Although during these stressful times, I definitely could use it.
This was a good way for me to get back into that relaxation. And it just a short meditation to get me back into things. So that was one of the greatest benefits for me, just giving myself that five minutes to relax.
Stress Relief & Relaxation
Stress relief is a big thing.
When it comes to how you’re eating, whether you’re willing to work out just every part of your life, how well you’re sleeping.
I thought it contributed to stress relief for me. And that’s definitely a huge benefit.
I can’t say that it really improved my posture as such. I’ve been working on some other stretches for a video that’s coming up.
Make sure you’re subscribed so you can see that. So I’m not really sure that it was just this particular exercise that helped. I have been working on some more mobility and flexibility exercises.
Anyway, however, I can’t say that there were any negative effects from this particular exercise. Maybe I will continue to do it. Maybe just those five minutes a day, this is a time of meditation. And to allow myself to relax.
My takeaway is if it works for you, keep doing it.
If it makes your back feel better, that’s great.
There is no harm in lying on your back for five minutes a day in that position, unless it’s something that causes you ongoing pain, you can use that five minutes to just breathe and relax.
If that means that you’re incorporating a five minute relaxation and meditation session into your day, then that’s awesome. Like that’s a great thing to do. And a lot of people struggle with that.
